A gastroenteritis outbreak in a child care centre is defined as:
Two or more children or staff reporting sudden onset of vomiting or diarrhoea in a 2 day period
Does your child care centre currently meet the outbreak definition as described above?
* must provide value
Yes No
Based on the criteria above you DO NOT meet the definition to report a gastroenteritis outbreak at your facility at this time. You will need to monitor case numbers and re-report using a new report if you are notified of 2 or more cases of gastroenteritis in children or staff members in a two day period.
If this is correct please click 'confirm' and then 'submit' at the bottom of this page. This will notify the Public Health Unit that you have reported an exposure only.
If this is not correct please review your response to the previous question* must provide value

Have you been notified that a child or staff member has had a stool sample collected?
Yes
No
Please provide any details you can about the stool sample. For example:
Was the person tested through a hospital/their own GP? Do you know the result of the stool sample? There are many different pathogens (disease-causing agents) that can cause gastroenteritis. A pathogen is not always identified. If a pathogen is identified (e.g. bacteria, virus, toxin), please let us know the name of this pathogen. If you are unsure, please provide us as much information as you can and we can call you if we need to discuss futher
As you have identified that a person/s has been hospitalised with gastroenteritis and/or a pathogen has been isolated, we are now going to ask you to provide additional details about your facility. This information will assist us in assessing what Public Health support is required to assist your team with the management of this outbreak.

Have you completed an illness line list for your facility? Yes
No
Please upload your line list here
Please download a copy of the line list template attached here, name the document with the facility name and date and upload it during your next update to the Public Health Unit
Instructions on how to update the Public Health Unit will be sent via email once you complete this report. Line Lists
Line lists are used by the Public Health Unit to monitor the gastroenteritis outbreak at your facility. It is important that you complete this register and return it to Public Health as soon as possible. New cases reported to your facility should be added to this same line list, this line list should be kept up to date by your facility until your outbreak has been declared over by the Public Health Unit.
We recommend that you provide regular weekly updates to the Public Health Unit. You should also notify us immediately if any of the following reporting triggers are identified;
Staff/children have been hospitalised due to gastroenteritis Staff/ children are reporting a long duration of illness i.e majority of cases are symptomatic for >3days Staff/children have had pathogen (a disease causing agent e.g. bacteria, virus, toxin) identified in their stool specimen Large attack rates i.e >50% of staff/children within your facility are reporting symptoms If any of the above are reported to your centre or you are concerned for any other reason please notify us using the unique reporting link that will be emailed to you immediately after completing this report. Alternatively you can contact the Public Health Unit directly on 4320 9730 to discuss.
Resources
There are two key resources Child Care facilities need to access when managing a gastroenteritis outbreak within your centre.
NSW Health Gastro Pack for Child Care Centres; and Staying Healthy: Preventing infectious diseases in early childhood education and care service These are attached below, a copy of these documents will also be provided to you in an email at the completion of this report. Please ensure you have read these resources and have applied all recommended actions specific to your facility.
The following information outlines key recommendations from these documents
NSW Health Gastro Pack for Child Care Centres Staying Healthy, 5th Edition Hand Hygiene Perform hand hygiene regularly;
Avoid using alcohol based hand rubs, wash hands with soap and water Staff should supervise washing of children's hands, and wash the hands of younger children after they use the toilet Staff should minimise wearing jewellery below the elbows and not have artificial nails. Isolate and Exclude Sick Child and Staff
Avoid mixing of staff and children across multiple child care rooms where able i.e family grouping Remove children/staff with vomiting or diarrhoea from the rest of the group as soon as symptoms appear Exclude sick children and staff from attending the centre for at least 48 hours after their symptoms stop. Enhanced Cleaning
Undertake environmental cleaning twice daily, initially with detergent and water, then a solution of bleach, including all high touch points and bathrooms. Once bleach is dry you can clean again with clean water if worried about bleach usage. Bleach is an effective killer of pathogens that cause gastroenteritis. Close the sandpit, close any mud-kitchens or similar, discard play dough, do not use soft toys Communication
Inform all staff and families that there is a gastroenteritis outbreak Provide families with a letter and gastroenteritis fact sheet (available in the NSW Health Gastro Pack) Ensure gastroenteritis outbreak signage is displayed in visible locations throughout the centre We are constantly trying to improve this reporting system, if you have any feedback regarding:
